2001 Gala Concert
Manx National Youth Band conducted by Derek
The Manx National Youth Band and Manx Concert Brass held their
Summer Gala Concert in the Villa Marina, Douglas on Sunday 15th July. The evening promised to
be a real treat for our audience as the program chosen by our Musical Director Ian Clague, in
conjunction with our Guest Conductor for the night Derek Broadbent was very ambitious indeed!
With a week of solid rehearsal prior to the concert, Derek, again worked the band very hard
which resulted in some of the finest playing that the bands have achieved to date.
The evening was also made special by the attendance of the Bands Patron, His Excellency the
Lieutenant Governor, Air Marshal Ian Macfadyen CB OBE and Mrs Macfadyen, and his mother!
Band president, Major General Sir Laurence
New CB CBE, introducing our Guest Conductor Derek Broadbent to our guest of honour, His
Excellency the Lieutenant Governor, Air Marshall Ian McFadyen CBE OBE.
The concert took on our usual format of a concert of three halves! with the Youth Band starting
proceedings, followed by Concert Brass, then a combined program, all under the direction of our
guest conductor, Derek Broadbent. As a special tribute to the Bands founding conductor Jimmy
Crosbie, to mark the 20th anniversary of his untimely death, the bands Musical Director, Ian
Clague MBE took the helm for Peter Graham's arrangement of the Hymn Tune Crimond. This turned
out to be a very special musical moment, which the audience fully appreciated. Click

It was also announced to the public at the concert the details of a very generous donation that
was recently made to the bands by the Isle of Man Law Society. This donation allowed us to buy
a number of new instruments, which were used for the first time by members of the Youth Band at
the concert. We are extremely grateful to them for their support.
The organisation would like to thank all of the sponsors, in particular Charles Brand (IoM) who,
without their help, it would have been very difficult for us to put on such a concert.
