Gala Concert review and programme
Manx Youth Band and Manx Concert Brass recently set the Villa Marina alight with brass band music with our 2009 annual Gala concert. There was a large audience to enjoy the concert under the banner of ‘That’s Entertainment’.
The band opened up the concert with a rousing rendition of ‘Olympic Fanfare & Theme’ written by John Williams and arranged by Forster & Dye. During the first half we heard the first three of our soloists for the evening. First up was our Principal Cornet, Simon Briggs playing the Merrill & Styne piece ‘People’. Next was Stephen Maddocks playing Hoagey Carmichael’s ‘Stardust’ on Trombone and the final solo in this half was ‘Song for Ina’ written by Philip Sparke played by our Principal Euphonium Phil Shimmin. Simon, Stephen and Phil are three of our most experienced players and didn’t it show, beautiful playing from each of them. The first half of the concert was concluded with Goff Richards arrangement of ‘Disney Fantasy’.
After the interval it was the turn of the Manx Youth Band. The organisation has been working very hard over the last two years with the new generation of players along with some of the parents, as Ian mentioned in his commentary, to build up the Manx Youth Band back to the excellent standard it has enjoyed in previous years. This talent was showed off to the audience as they played ‘Two Movie Themes’ arranged by Cameron Mabon which included ‘Eye of the Tiger’ and ‘Jurassic Park’, then Henry Mancini’s ‘Moon River’ followed by Two Cartoon Themes ‘The Muppet Show’ and ‘Scooby Doo’ also arranged by Cameron Mabon. The encore for the Youth Band was Andrew Duncan\'s lovely arrangement of ‘Highland Cathedral’.
On completion of the Youth Band’s programme, James Mayles, the band\'s Chairman, gave a short speech about the current progress of the Organisation. He confirmed the Organisation’s commitment to the young players of the band and the continued efforts made by everyone to find the band a permanent home.
Once James had drawn the raffle it was back to the music. Manx Concert Brass came back on stage in a blackout. After an introduction from Richard Burton the lights came up as the band played a stunning arrangement of ‘The Eve of the War’ from Jeff Wayne’s ‘War of the Worlds’. This half of the concert featured our other two soloists for the evening, James Aire, the Youth Band’s Principal Cornet playing Bert Kaempfert’s ‘Spanish Eyes’ and Mark Lewin, the band\'s Flugal player, who played a beautiful arrangement of ‘Concerto D\'arunjuez’ by Rodrigo. The programme was brought to a close with Ray Farr’s arrangement of Bill Whelan’s ‘Riverdance’ which featured several solo players from the band and also an exciting ending with players from the band lining across the front of the stage and the whole band standing up for the last note to reverberate around the Royal hall.
Of course that was not the end, the audience asked for more and the band obliged with an enthralling arrangement of the theme tune from ‘Stingray’ and then closed out the evening with Ray Farr’s arrangement of ‘One Voice’.
The concert concluded with a standing ovation from the audience who had thoroughly enjoyed a varied musical experience in which we obviously had ‘Entertained’.
Well done to all who took prt in the evening especially the Youth Band players playing in their first Gala Concert. Thanks to Ian our Musical Director and also a big thanks to everyone involved in the organisation of this concert, especially those who manned the table in the foyer and the collecting buckets at the end of the concert. The band raised over £3000 which will help in our efforts to continue to bring brass banding to the youth of the Isle of Man.
